What is World Ocean Day?
World Ocean Day is an annual global celebration of our ocean that takes place every 8 June.
World Ocean Day bring awareness of the ocean, connects people worldwide, and inspires continuing action year-round to protect and restore our ocean.
Plastic pollution in the ocean has become a global problem for both humans and marine life that requires everyone to work together to create change.
It is important to know that not all plastic items can be recycled. Even those that are intended to be recycled can still litter the land and sea.
This can directly and indirectly harm wildlife and human health. For example, the plastic that ends up in the oceans can be mistaken for food by sea turtles and other marine animals.
To reduce the harm that animals may face, it is important to stop using single-use plastic products.
We can all do our part by switching to reusable items made from sustainable materials.
Plastic bottles and bags can take hundreds of years to breakdown, or potentially thousands of years when compressed in landfills. However, plastic items never truly completely decompose. Chemicals and microplastics will linger in the environment for centuries. Despite all the environmental concerns, the low costs and convenience of many plastic items, make demand and production of these items still increase.
Fortunately, people around the world have taken the initiative to help with solutions to this problem and so can you!
If you live near a beach, river, lake or in a marina like we do, everyone has the ability to make a change. Every ounce of single-use plastic prevention helps; even removing one piece of plastic from the ocean could save the life of an animal.
Our own MarinaWildKidz should be at the forefront of the fight for a healthy blue planet and the species that call it home by assisting in Clean Up projects whether it is inland or on the coastline and seashore. In the end even landsite pollutants land in the ocean and have an impact on the ocean.
Check out the cool websites where you can find lots of information on how to arrange a Clean Up event with your friends or start an Anti-plastic campaign at: https://worldoceanday.org/resources/
Clean Ups are just one part of the solution. In order to achieve a plastic-free future we must go to the source of the problem and stop the production of unnecessary single-use plastic items and packaging by opting for sustainable alternatives.
It is going to take all of us working together to stop plastic pollution for good.
Together we can protect and restore the ocean!
