PLOGGING
A combination of words: you pick what works for you:
PLOcka upp (the Swedish phrase for pick up) combined with jOGGING
(the Swedes started this movement so I think I’ll stick to this explanation.)
OR
PLanet and jOGGING as in “Jogging for a better Planet”
What does this mean?
It means you get exercise and make a difference – all while maintaining your health or becoming fit while picking up litter.
The best part?
You don’t have to jog.. any exercise will do … walking, hiking, paddling, you can do it all…. while cleaning your environment. Some people pick up litter stretching their muscles, others do cartwheels..
The point is: it is anything as long as you are active, picking up litter and cleaning the planet.
You can do plogging on your own or with friends, heading out every morning on your normal route. This time you each go with your gloves, tongs and bag (a plog tog), collecting rubbish as you go along.
You can use an activity tracker or app so you can record both your fitness progress and location of your plog.
Apps that can be used, include e.g., Go Plogging!, Strava, Plogging, etc.
It may also be handy to use a small backpack or bumbag to carry hand sanitiser, water, phone and any other equipment.
After the plog:
Pack out what you collected and take a picture
Sort the waste in categories re. recyclable /non-recyclable for effective disposal.
Map your route and distance.
Keep record of your efforts and upload your details and pictures to the MMHOA Website Environment > Management > My Plogging cache!
This could give you some bragging rights, and of importance, it helps us to:
- Know where you have been and where clean-up is still required
- Understand main types of waste, dumping areas or increased movement sites
- Find solutions for recycling, more bins placed in certain areas, etc.
Grab your plog tog, stay fit, be healthy, help us clean our environment

SAFE PLOGGING GUIDE
Plogging is a great way to get fit and it can be a full body workout!.
Here are some tips to make sure you plog safely:
- Dress in comfortable running gear (active wear and enclosed shoes or joggers)
- Ensure weather appropriate attire (sun protection, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and take note of weather forecasts for the day)
- Use hand sanitiser before, during and after the plog
- Have a textile, reusable bag handy to avoid additional landfill stress.
- Only ever plog at a pace you are comfortable with
- Bend your knees. Even though the litter you pick up may not be heavy, you may be bending over frequently to pick them up
- Avoid strain on your back and stretch your legs for fitness – rather do a lunge than bending with lock knees
- Avoid repetitive strain and invest in a rubbish picker, tongs or pole tongs.
- DO NOT pick up dangerous or health hazardous waste (syringes, broken glass, nappies, etc.) – Mark these on your route map and inform the HOA.
- If you observe wildlife along the route, add this to the records you send to the HOA.
- If any incidents occur, report those to the HOA Control Room on 042 292 0457
