Environmental Code of Conduct

Marina Martinique

Introduction

The Marina is described in its glossy coffee table book “The Story of the Marina Martinique” as a lifestyle estate with “a host of marine life, abundant birdlife, Bushbuck, Blue Duiker and numerous small animals roaming freely….” and with “waterways that meander lazily through the unique marina– the only of its kind in South Africa.” Further in the book there is reference to “a small area with very old Milkwood trees… a reserve, on condition that it would never be sold for residential purposes. Today this area is known as the Arthur Fennell Park.”

This document is aimed to protect these natural assets which are so elegantly described in the book.

Description

This purpose this code of conduct is to give practical guidance to the actions and policies of the Marina so that its biodiversity and ecological systems can be protected. Meaning must be given to an ethical approach to the Marina’s environment.

Principles

  • Protect the waterways and its marine life. The waterways are the biggest asset of the Marina. Prevent that chemicals land in the waterways. Choose nontoxic chemicals in the home and on the grounds of the Marina;
  • Residents are encourage to reduce, reuse and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away. Conserve natural resources and landfill space;
  • Conserve water. The less water you use, the less run-off and wastewater will eventually end up in the ocean;
  • Volunteer for clean-ups in your estate. Get involved. Don’t rely on the grounds staff. Your example will lead to participation and a more environmentally friendly behaviour;
  • Educate your community. You can help others by developing an understanding of the environment. Encourage residents to plant more indigenous trees and bush and to get involved in looking after the wildlife. Adopt a caring attitude;
  • Sustainable living. Stop using plastics, reduce household energy and consider the utilization of renewable energy, such as solar and wind energy;
  • Use long-lasting bulbs. The coal power plants in use to power the older incandescent bulbs emit an enormous amount of carbon dioxide that contributes to global warming. Energy efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Switch off lights when you leave a room;
  • Grow you own vegetables and herbs and consume less meat and dairy products.

Rules

These principles should be read in conjunction with the Rules and Regulations of the Marina.

Conclusion

Environmental responsibility is the duty of every resident to protect and improve the environment in and around the Marina. An environmentally responsible community will assess their environmental sustainability and apply their knowledge to their decision-making.
